It’s Friday again, and welcome back to Earthly Vibes. Today we will be discussing how normal everyday herbs actually have extraordinary uses and how you can incorporate them in your everyday life. Before starting my own garden, I knew I wanted to grow herbs that not only tasted great, but also had great effects. At first, I thought that I would have to make the choice to either grow food, or medicine. My natural curiosity for herbology and well-being led me to do extensive research which I am going to share with you today! But remember to consult your doctor before making any major changes to your medicinal routine, mixing herbs with medication can be dangerous. Now that we have the disclaimers out of the way, let’s get started shall we!
Let’s start with everyone’s favorite herb, Sage. Sage has been used throughout the ages in various cultures for many purposes. For many years people have used Sage to cleanse and purify the negative ions in the air, help with digestion, and circulation. But did you know that the purple leafed sage is used to restore failing memory in the elderly, while the root of the green leafed sage is used to help with menopause due to its ability to stimulate blood flow and cool the body. It can even be used as a hair rinse to stimulate the scalp, reduce dandruff, and restore color to graying hair. Think about that the next time you go to the beauty shop to pick up that black hair dye!
Let’s move on to strawberries. Who doesn’t like strawberries? It’s hard to resist their sweet taste and versatility, but what if I were to tell you that the berry isn’t the best part of the plant. The fresh leaves and root of a strawberry bush has been used to help with diarrhea, while the stock is used to heal wounds. Just boil as a tonic or compression and let nature do the rest.
Lastly, we have the most common and well-known herb, Lavender. Lavender is awesome with its sweet menthol scent and curative properties. I’m not even going to go down its long list of benefits, but I will highlight a few that you probably didn’t know about. Have a crying baby? Try a weak infusion (25% of normal strength) of lavender and water to help with colic and irritability. It can also be used as a mouthwash (along with sage) to reduce halitosis. Lavender can even be used as a hair rinse to help get rid of lice. And did you know that gnats hate lavender (an employee at home depot actually told me this and it works!). Just leave a scented candle or burn the essential oil to rid yourself of the pesky flying insect.
These are only a few uses, there are millions of herbs and plants out there with extraordinary properties. It’s just up to you to discover their secrets and use them to better your health. That being said, thank you so much for tuning into Earthly Vibes, and remember there’s nothing wrong with going green.
